Recognition Program

Wyatt Harris Smith Teacher Recognition Program

The idea of this Teacher Recognition program was conceived during a very difficult time in my life. In February of 2016 my son, Wyatt, was born with a rare birth defect. This incurable anomaly would ultimately claim his life two months later. In these darkest of days, my family, both at home and at work, saved my life.

That Fall, I returned to Foothills Middle School, searching for a new purpose as a childless mother. I knew I wanted to honor my son; I knew I wanted to share him and celebrate him everyday of my life. I thought a lot about this, personally and professionally.

In November, I approached the ATA Executive Board with an idea to take my stipend as Secretary, and place those funds in an award system to recognize teachers. They were really supportive and encouraged me to design the program. So, I did. Educators with 15 or more years of service became my focus. ATA would provide a certificate of recognition, a gift card and a personalized note for each of these fine teachers. In just five months, we have already been able to honor 150 of our colleagues!

This has been a healing process for me. I enjoy making people feel good about themselves and celebrating teachers is incredibly rewarding for me, too. This program is one way I have been able to express appreciation for the big family of AUSD. I cannot think of a better way to keep my son alive in the hearts of others. I encourage all recipients of this program to celebrate by tweeting out your awards/photos with Wyatt’s hashtag: #WyattHarrisSmithTRP
